Positive recent developments for cyclists

A number of positive cycling-relating developments occurred during December 2009.  These include –

  • Three new safety leaflets detailing safety tips for cyclists; HGV drivers’ interactions with cyclists and bus drivers interactions with cyclists are now available;
  • The Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations 2009 came into force on 14 December 2009 to formally legalise the use of flashing front and rear lights on bicycles.  Such lights – which many cyclists consider to be more visible to other road users than steady lights – have been illegal since their introduction on the market many years ago;
  • Cork County Council opened two off road cycling routes, from Carrigaline to Crosshaven, and from Passage West to Rochestown.  The Council also completed safe walking and cycling routes in the town of Eyeries linking the school and GAA club to the town centre.
  • Dublin City Council completed the refurbishment of 21 kilometres of existing cycle tracks at various locations including Harold's Cross Road, George's Street, Aungier Street, Wexford Street, Camden Street, Rathmines Road Lower, Rathgar Road, Morehampton Road, Donnybrook Road, Finglas Road, Dorset Street, Drumcondra Road and Parkgate Street;
