The Vision for SmarterTravel

Noel Dempsey T.D., Minister for TransportSmarterTravel is about achieving a sustainable transport system for Ireland. An efficient and reliable transport system is essential to support both economic growth and the social development of our country. But it is now widely recognised that, while continuing to meet our transport needs, we must all work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reliance on imported fossil fuels and traffic congestion, while also improving local environments, quality of life and the health of our citizens.

The SmarterTravel Policy sets out a long-term plan on how this can be achieved through a range of actions such as encouraging modal shift away from the car, promoting fuel efficiency and new technology, and improved planning. We must work to promote walking, cycling and public transport as the most sustainable and healthy travel modes, as well as embracing new technologies and ideas that can reduce the need to travel, or the negative impacts of transport.

The Government is committed to facilitating and encouraging people to use alternative transport modes, wherever possible. Change will be incremental, and a times difficult, but I am confident that the end result will not only be a more sustainable transport system, but also a brighter future, with enhanced economic competitiveness, improved public spaces and a happier, healthier, population.
