The SmarterTravel Policy Document

SmarterTravel, A Sustainable Transport Future, is the transport policy for Ireland for the period 2009-2020. The policy recognises the vital importance of continued investment in transport to ensure an efficient economy and continued social development, but it also sets out the necessary steps to ensure that people choose more sustainable transport modes such as walking, cycling and public transport. The policy is a response to the fact that continued growth in demand for road transport is not sustainable from a number of angles; it will lead to further congestion, further local air pollution, contribute to global warming, and result in negative impacts to health through promoting increasingly sedentary lifestyles. The full document sets out the vision, goals and targets of the policy, and outlines the 49 actions that form the basis of achieving a more sustainable transport future.
